Walking through the park

The recent article in the U.S. News & World Report that chose Columbia, South Carolina as one of the 10 best affordable places to retire only told half of the story. The article focused mainly on downtown Columbia, Five Points, and USC areas of Richland County. There was no mention of anything that might attract a retiree to Lexington County.

Lexington County, just across the bridge from downtown Columbia has literally thousands of housing options for anyone relocating to the area. The options run the gambit from affordable age qualified patio homes like Agape Village in West Columbia to million dollar mansions on Lake Murray.

The on-going development of the river-walk greenway, a walking, biking, paradise that meanders for several miles through ancient flood plains along the banks of the Congaree River in West Columbia, and Cayce is a favorite area for young and old alike.

The development of the greenway has spurred a lot of new growth in the area. New neighborhoods have sprung up to take advantage of the recreational opportunities offered by the location. A typical morning might find a new resident taking a brisk morning stroll among the incredible scenery and wildlife along the river. Later he or she can savor a robust cup of coffee and delicious breakfast at Café Strudel just a block off the river.

A new amphitheatre was built in conjunction with the greenway using the graceful arches of the Gervais street Bridge and downtown as its backdrop. The West Metro Chambers highly successful free concert series, Rhythm on the River that runs from May through June on every Sat night takes advantage of the magnificent scenery afforded with this setting.

Now throw in a world class zoo like Riverbanks Zoo and Botanical Gardens, great medical facilities such as Lexington Medical, Fabulous state parks like Dreher Island on Lake Murray, golf courses, and every level of senior care from one of the states largest senior care providers Agape Senior, and you have a great retirement destination.

The midlands area is rich in history, is conducive to a fun active life style, has a mild climate, and  some of the friendliest people you will ever meet. Check us out.
